Lapidary
“The pebble in the brook secretly believes itself to be a precious stone.” Japanese proverb.
I’m hooked! Yes much to my surprise, I am a rock hound!
Here’s how it happened:
I found myself wanting stones in a different sizes, type and or colors than I could find. This led me to the Roseville Rock Rollers Gem and Mineral Society Rock and Mineral Show. And now have found another love, Lapidary! Joining the group has been so much fun and very educational. This past year I have been learning how to identify, cut and polish stones; still learning from some of the nicest, most knowledgeable, sharing people, I have ever met.
First, I thought that there is no way I will ever go out and hunt /mine the stones; I’ll just buy stone slabs and cut them myself. But this spring found me way out of my comfort zone, in the outback of Oregon, collecting Oregon Sun stones. I had so much fun. I've been there twice, and can’t wait to go some where else.
The beauty of finding stone and gems in the rough then polishing them to reveal their colors and beauty is so amazing. Knowing that I picked up this stone, I cut it, I polished it, and now I set into a piece of jewelry is making me love jewelry making even more. I have so much more to learn!
So if you see me walking round and my head is down. Don’t think I’m sad or depressed or even ignoring you, I just making sure I don’t miss a great rock!
